PRF for skin
What is PRF?
PRF refers to platelet-rich fibrin that is also known as leukocyte- and platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF). PRF is an improved version of platelet-rich plasma or PRP therapy which is used widely to rejuvenate skin.
Platelets are one of the components present in our blood along with red and white blood cells. The main function of platelets is to form fibrin that helps the blood clot during an injury, thereby preventing excessive bleeding.
Platelets’ healing properties have been known to humans for centuries while medical researchers in recent times have found that these components speed up wound healing and recovery after certain surgeries. PRF is also extensively used to help promote wound healing, bone regeneration, and to control bleeding.
How Does PRF Restore Skin Health?
The interplay of multiple extrinsic and intrinsic factors including genetics, environment, lifestyle choices, exposure to ultraviolet rays, aging, illnesses, and injuries contribute to optimal skin health.
The necessary components for a youthful-looking skin are hydration (provided by hyaluronic acid) and structural support (provided by collagen and elastin).
Wage or sun damage less collagen is produced, which leads to wrinkles and folds.
PRF combined with microneedling enhances the texture and tone of the skin while addressing wrinkles, fine lines, brown spots, and under-eye bags. The overall outcome is a refreshed, youthful-looking skin free from blemishes.
What Is the Source of PRF?
The source of PRF is your own blood. After drawing a blood sample, this is centrifuged which causes the blood to separate into three layers. The plasma (liquid portion of the blood) settles in the topmost layer while the red blood cells migrate to the bottom-most layer. The PRF component that contains platelets settles in the middle layer which is further concentrated.
PRF contains biologically active proteins which help in skin healing and rejuvenation, including:
- Growth factors
- Bone morphogenetic (growth) protein
- Healing matrix proteins
- Other regenerative components
How Is PRF Administered?
At our top-rated med spa in the Napa area, we specialize in microneedling with PRF. While we use the FDA-approved SkinPen device to produce microscopic punctures on the skin, we then introduce platelet-rich fibrin into the micro-wounds to support the body’s natural ability to heal and rejuvenate itself.
The combination of microneedling and PRF results in firmer, smoother and vibrant skin from inside out. When this nutrient-rich matrix is introduced to the damaged area on the skin, platelets are activated releasing regenerative proteins that bring about therapeutic effects.
Prior to treatment, the provider applies a topical numbing cream after which the skin is prepared for the microneedling procedure. Meanwhile, a sample of blood is drawn and centrifuged to prepare PRF. PRF is then introduced into the micro-wounds that are made through the microneedling procedure.
